At the request of high school faculty, a mandatory assembly was scheduled where 80 high school students viewed the powerful HBO documentary, Smashed: Toxic Tales of Teens and Alcohol. The film follows a series of teens moving through a Maryland Hospital Emergency Room who have been injured in drinking related accidents.
A series of resource materials accompanies the documentary, including a discussion guide, lesson plan, and pre and post viewing surveys for teens and adults. Mark Fontineau, the school science and health teacher, introduced the film to the group and read the introduction from the discussion guide. The students appeared to be engaged by the film, reacting to some of the more humorous and graphic parts. And, the survey results indicate that the film had a definite impact on the students.
